Neuropsychological Assessment/Consultation
A Neuropsychological Assessment is a comprehensive assessment of cognitive (thinking) and behavioural functions, using a set of standardised tests and interview questioning.
Neuropsychological assessments are routinely undertaken following traumatic brain injury, concussion, stroke, other neurological disorder, chemical exposure, psychiatric or mood disorder, substance use, ageing and or neurodegenerative change. The report provides objective information regarding the client's cognitive, physical and or behavioural functioning.
The outcome will vary but examples of assessment objectives may be to determine future treatment plans, to understand work feasibility or future support requirements. It can assist in decision making regarding clinical safety, to drive, manage financial and or welfare concerns and assist in establishing testamentary capacity.
A Neuropsychological Assessment is an extended session that can take between 3 - 5 hours. The results of psychometric measures are scored and analysed following the assessment and form the basis of a comprehensive report, including diagnosis, expert opinion, and treatment recommendations. It is often beneficial to provide a formal follow-up appointment to discuss the results of assessment/report and any recommendations.
Reports can be requested by private individuals, corporates, medical practitioners, ACC, licensing or statutory professional bodies, barristers, and or whanau who may be concerned about an individual. The referral questions guide the measures administered and can include personality assessment.
All clients are supplied with an explanation of what to expect during an initial discussion, along with their client rights, responsibilities of all parties, and treatment of confidentiality and privacy matters. Provision can be made for specific individual needs such as management of fatigue, medication compliance, client support, physical and or sensory disability.
